Silk scarf is a sophisticated and a versatile accessory that can be worn in a multitude of ways. Whether you tie a scarf around your handbag’s handle or choose to wear it, it takes the whole outfit up a notch. In this article I will share some tutorials on how to wear one.
Trends are a funny thing. Some of them become classics that work throughout the year and for years on end. Others fade with the season and hopefully never return.
While some trends bring back traumas for those who lived to see the 80’s there are trends that do not cause such strong reactions in fashionistas. One such trend is the silk scarf.
You know, the beautifully patterned accessory that your granny used to wear around her neck at special occasions. This season it’s all about the beautiful patterns decorating our dresses, tops and skirts, and also scarves.
In these times of over-consumption I thought I’d take a more sustainable approach to this trend. So, I went roaming into my mum’s scarf collection and found exactly what I knew I would: 2 beautiful silk scarves with exactly the sort of patterns that are totally in fashion right now.
But since I have never worn such a scarf I thought I’d display couple different ways I discovered in terms of how to wear this particular accessory.
So, here are 5 different ways you can wear a square-shaped scarf and a longer scarf. Colours and patterns are up to you.
Tutorial: 5 Ways To Wear a Silk Scarf
A beautiful silk scarf is such a versatile accessory! It can easily be styled from a day-look to completing an evening look as well. This season you could, for example, replace jewelry with a colourful silk scarf around you neck. Add a pair of pearl earrings to that and you’re done!
Let’s dive into different ways to wear and style your silk scarves.
Stylish bib
This style reminds me of a bib. But as long as the silk scarf is decorative enough, it shouldn’t resemble one when worn to the office. I prefer this look for office outfits in particular; it goes really nicely with a crisp white shirt and a jacket.
How to do it:
- Fold a square-shaped scarf from one corner to the opposite corner so that you’re left with a triangle shape.
- Fold the scarf around your neck so that the ends go around the back, all the way to the front and tie them up.
- Hide the knot beneath the “flap” left on the front and adjust into correct shape and length.
Decorative ponytail
Silk scarf looks particularly wonderful when incorporated to different sorts of ponytails or buns, in my opinion. They bring a really nice twist to everyday hairstyles and make one’s hair look much more abundant.
For hair accessory you can buy different kinds of bows and decorative knots made of scarves with a hairpin attached to them. Or you can use just a scarf itself!
How to do it:
- There are no pins required for this simple silk scarf hairstyle.
- For those who have thick hair, you can just tie up a ponytail with the scarf.
- For us fair-haired ones I suggest to first do a regular ponytail and then roll a nice scarf around it.
One scarf, 3 styles
A long, thin silk scarf is much more versatile than a square scarf. So, if you like to play around with different styles I recommend you invest in a long, thin scarf.
I especially liked Ted Baker’s array of scarves for this season. The Ted Baker prints always make me salivate.
How to do it:
- The first look is very straight-forward: drape the scarf once around your neck and tie the ends on a loose knot leaving the ends hanging as they are. You could also position the ends on top of each other so that the style is bit more ‘cravat’-like.
- For the 2nd look, tie the silk scarf around your neck just like in style one and make 2 separate knots, leaving the second knot quite loose. For stability push some of the scarf edges underneath your shirt collar and position the ends elegantly over your shoulder.
- The third option here is also a 2-knot style where the second knot should be a bit more ‘messy’ and artistic while leaving the other end shorter than the other.
Basically with a longer scarf you should just play around: try out different ways to position and tie it. Let your creativity take flight and come up with a completely original style. This season it’s completely encouraged!
Conclusion
A simple silk scarf can take any outfit to a whole new level when worn in different ways. Whether as a hair accessory, wrapped around a bag handle or your waist, or styled up around your neck, it brings in a bit sophistication.
